Breakout on Steroids
Breakout - more specifically the breakout formula - has got to be one of my all time favorites. I have a pretty short attention span, so the concept of using a rolling ball to smash things really does wonders for me. It's a simple concept - one that is easy to wrap your head around - but it can be enjoyed on so many levels. You wouldn't think a game that revolves around destroying everything in sight would be that deep, but it is. You also wouldn't think it would require this much finesse to break things, but it works, and it works well.
A Step Above the Rest
The first thing that I noticed about Adventure Ball - and the thing that set it apart from the standard Breakout clones - was the amazing depth and detail of the environments. Games that utilize this gameplay mechanic usually have environments that consist of colored blocks and sometimes a few more shapes. In this product, you're taken to actual locations such as an amusement park or any old western town. You'll go to these places and you'll destroy actual structures, plant life, and people. The environments alone make this game totally worth owning. Destruction is only fun if it's something actually worth destroying, right?
Not only are the environments full of detail, but graphically they look absolutely amazing as well. They resemble a nice blend of realistic and cartoon-like styles that for the most part look fantastic.
Another thing that looks great are all effects that various power-ups have on bumper and ball. They look very colorful and wild. There are certain power-ups that will morph the look and properties of your ball and others that will give your bumper special features, such as cannons and missiles launchers and what not. It's all very cool, to say the least.
Fast-paced Fun
Despite all the games that mimic this same exact gameplay, the Adventure Ball series pulls it off better than most. I've played all the games in the series and if you've liked any of them, you'll love to see where they all started.
Another great feature that you'll find here is the ability to customize your bumper. Your bumper consists of a little man in a wacky car with a giant bumper on the front! It works well in the silly context of the game. You can change the color of your car and uniform as well as the paint job on your car.
The various changeable elements of your car brings me to another thing: unlockables. You constantly unlock new things to add to your car, which makes the game very worthwhile to play again and again until you get everything.
One of the Best
The Adventure Ball series is a highly regarded series and this is the excellent entry that started it all. It represents everything good about casual computer games and is sure to keep you occupied for some time no matter what your preference in gaming.
