Time for a Vacation

Well, it's vacation time, but this is no ordinary vacation! Instead of lounging around on the beach and sipping colorful drinks with tiny umbrellas in them, you'll be trekking all over San Francisco, finding hidden objects in some of the city's most famous landmarks and locations. You can choose to be either Dad, Mom, Sister, Brother, Grandpa, or Grandma, and then slap in your own name and you're on your way!

Your first stop is Alcatraz, the famous island prison located in the San Francisco Bay. Alcatraz was supposedly impossible to escape from, but if you've seen the 1996 action film The Rock starring Sean Connery, than you know that isn't true!

You'll have to find twelve different objects in two very cluttered jail cells. These objects could range from simple things like toenail clippers and watches, to things like butterflies or even firetrucks. A good pointer to keep in mind is that if you have to find something that normally wouldn't fit in your current location - for example, a bridge - then you're likely to find it in some other incarnation; such as in a picture or a small model bridge. Things aren't always what they seem.

I've played a lot of games that revolve around this concept. The Mystery Case Files series is probably the best and most popular example. You're given a list of items that you must hunt down in a ridiculously messy locale. I say ridiculously messy because how many libraries have you seen that just let grasshoppers and ladybugs roam around freely? However, it's definitely the absurdness of it all that gives it its charm, and boy does Big City Adventure: San Francisco have its fair share of charm! I'd even go so far as saying its possibly the best game of its kind that I've ever played! Each level is excellently crafted with some sort of animated element thrown in - like a bug crawling around - that really makes it come to life. If this were eBay, I'd give it an "A++++++++" for presentation.

Puzzles to Unlock New Puzzles?


Those who like puzzle games are going to flip over this. Each time you beat a level, you must complete a sort-of mini puzzle to reveal what the next location is going to be. So far, there have been matching games, concentration-like games, and a new, creative take on the old matching formula. These mini games serve well to mix-up the action and keep everything fresh.


A big problem for a lot of games nowadays is that they're just too short. That isn't the case here, though! Big City Adventures: San Francisco has a whopping 60 levels and that's not even including the little in-between puzzles!
Worth Every Penny


I'm not trying to be over-dramatic, but this game really did blow me away. If you're a fan of "I Spy" type games such as Mystery Case Files, you'll go crazy over this one. From the terrific gameplay, to the rich enviroments and stellar graphics, this game really does have it all!
